Túsla Education Support Service (TESS)

Túsla Education Support Service provides 3 strands of services which support school attendance in different ways:

  • Educational Welfare Officers (EWOs) of Túsla Child and Family Agency work with young people and their families who are experiencing difficulty with school attendance.

Eligibility for referral to EWO : All pupils aged between the ages of 6 and 16 years who have not completed 3 years Post Primary education.

  • The Home School Community Liaison (HSCL) Scheme operates in Primary and Post Primary schools with DEIS status to engage and work collaboratively with the adult carers of children & young people who have difficulties in school, in order to ensure their improved attendance, participation and retention in the education system.

  • School Completion Programmes (SCPs) operate in Post Primary schools with DEIS status and their feeder Primary Schools with a focus on targeting and providing supports to young people who are at risk of early school leaving. Initiatives to support and secure retention of young people include breakfast clubs, homework clubs and mentoring programmes, programmes to support transition from primary to secondary school.

Eligibility: Children and young people with low levels of School Attendance, behavioural and / or learning concerns who are attending a DEIS Primary or Post Primary School.

Referral: Self-referral, parental referral, agency referral, school referral

There are currently five School Completion Programmes (SCPs) operational in the county:
