The Legal Aid Board provides legal aid and advice in civil cases to people in Ireland who meet certain criteria. It also provides a free family mediation service and assists in the operation of the Abhaile scheme (which helps people in home mortgage arrears).
The Legal Aid Board provides legal aid and advice in the following areas:
- Judicial separation
- Divorce
- Maintenance
- Domestic Violence
- Custody of and Access to children
- Problems relating to hire-purchase agreements
- Contract disputes
- Applications for asylum, subsidiary protection or permission to remain in Ireland
The Legal Aid Board’s Family Mediation service encourages the separating couple to co-operate with each other in working out mutually acceptable arrangements on all or any of the following:
- Parenting the children
- Financial support
- Family home and property
- Other problems related to the separation
The Family Mediation Service is a child-focused service putting strong emphasis on the well-being of the child/children involved in separation and divorce. The mediator ensures that the ‘Voice of the Child’ is brought into the mediation process. This is done either directly or indirectly.
Eligibility:
To avail of legal aid, the applicant’s means must be below a certain limit and there must be merit in the case.
How to access:
For Family Mediation service, direct contact with a local family mediation office.
To find out if a person qualifies for legal aid or advice, s/he can apply on-line or send a completed copy of the Legal Aid Application form to the nearest Law Centre
