A Community Development Worker is employed by HSE Disability services to undertake projects to raise awareness of the needs of people with disabilities and to promote their integration in the local community. The worker has been involved in a County Council and HSE-sponsored town-based Gold Star initiative, initially in Cashel, and in more recent years in Tipperary town, working with the local communities and with people with different levels of ability to enhance inclusion at different levels. Some of the range of actions undertaken in these towns include:

  • Development of an award scheme to acknowledges agencies, businesses, organisations, community facilities and services that make adaptations and take measures to have their buildings, amenities and services made more welcoming and accessible to all people
  • Participation of Post Primary School students in such awareness-raising projects as the production of videos
  • Development of the ‘Sign of the Times’ project: its key feature is an award-winning video developed by Post Primary School students to promote the learning and use of Sign Language by the wider community.
  • Development of ‘Let’s Able, not Label’ Disability Awareness Training Resource Pack.

The worker has also provided information, advice and support in relation to the issue of disability and related matters to other initiatives and to other groups in the South of the county.
