The Gold Star Disability initiative was set up to enable communities to work together to improve disability awareness and the integration of people with disabilities in all social and cultural activities in their local community. It is operating in two towns, Cashel and Tipperary town. Some of the range of actions undertaken in these towns include:

  • Development of an award scheme to acknowledges agencies, businesses, organisations, community facilities and services that make adaptations and take measures to have their buildings, amenities and services made more welcoming and accessible to all people
  • Participation of Post Primary School students in such awareness-raising projects as the production of videos
  • Development of the ‘Sign of the Times’ project: its key feature is an award-winning video developed by Post Primary School students to promote the learning and use of Sign Language by the wider community.
  • Development of ‘Let’s Able, not Label’ Disability Awareness Training Resource Pack

The HSE Disabilities Community Development Worker has been and remains central to the development of the Gold Star initiative.

Target Group: People with Disabilities and their wider community in Tipperary town and Cashel.
