Special Education Needs Resources - Primary & Post Primary levels

Special Educational Needs resources constitute a range of educational supports for children with special needs in mainstream Primary & Post Primary School settings. Such resources can include access to a Special Education Teacher, a Special Needs Assistant, and assistive technology.

As of 2020, schools at Primary and Post Primary levels have a set allocation of resources, enabling them to independently provide Special Needs Assistants and Resource Teacher hours on the basis of presenting needs. The need for a diagnosis for the student or for application for these resources to the Special Education Needs Officer (SENO) is no longer required.

The role of the SENO entails the following:

  • Supporting and advising parents in identifying the appropriate educational setting for individual children with special educational needs.
  • Examining applications from all schools for additional special equipment/assistive technology and making recommendations to the Department of Education and Skills.
  • Examining applications from schools for transport arrangements for children with disabilities and providing a report to the Department of Education and Skills.
